WOMP! - The second most exciting thing you can do on a sofa

The game

In my last semester a team of five of us pitched a video game project to the school. After we got the green light it didn't take us long to get in the groove of things. Dave Marhal, WOMP! is a social multiplayer video game rated E for everyone with a strong focus on collaboration. In order for us to reach non-gamers and gamers alike, we decided to keep the controls simple, WOMP! is played with only one button.
Players are challenged to work together to control a customizable flying contraption, called the Wobblegong, through a whimsical environment. Each player controls only one side and has to figure out not only how to work effectively with the rest of the team, but also how to handle awkward tools such as an umbrella, a plunger or only one wing. It is like in life where you never seem to have the proper tools.

We didn't spend too much time brainstorming, we knew we had to be quick if we wanted to meet our first milestone, the Gamma 4 game competition that was only four weeks away. We didn't win, but we had a pretty fun first level finished by the end of January. A fantastic team and constant playtesting sessions were key for our early success. I am using the word success hesitantly here, but based on the feedback we have received people really seem to like our game.

To prove my point that our game is really for everyone, below are pictures of some of our game tester.

My Role

On a team of five, everybody is expected to wear multiple hats. My main function were Communications and Marketing. But since our game required tons of art assets, I assisted our Art Director, Salvia with her huge work load.
