Extraordinary Moments

The project

Extraordinary Moments explores the personal in the context of the world. Based on my grand-fathers accounting book, which he started in 1917 at the age of 12, I wanted to tell the story of my family, of a time when expressing one's political view meant putting the lives of loved ones at risk. It is the account of the people who become our ancestors, and suggests that no matter how mundane our day to day lives are, if put in the wider context of history, place and people, - every moment becomes extraordinary.

The process

This project was created for my Digital Art elective with Ian Verchere and shown at the skrol digital art exhibition in 2009.

It took quite a long time to go through my grandfather's book, try to figure out his writing and put the little snippets of a life in the bigger context of history. Aside from daily expenses, he was very meticulous in writing down political events of the time. Especially during WW2 the book became more a journal than just an accounting book.

My Role

Karin Schmidlin

I am the grand-daughter of the main protagonist, and somewhere in this simple accounting book is a small entry about an amount my grandfather lent to my parents in 1964 to travel to the USA, where on a hot September afternoon the seed that was to become me got planted. Even thought I would never consider myself an artist, I took the liberty of creating an art project from something as mundane as an accounting book. Art has to reflect life. Art is life.
