Deadbook - Hell is other people
www.deadbook.org
Deadbook is an interactive social network narrative set on the edge of the afterlife, as souls reconnect with
loved ones and ones less loved. As they sort through memories of who they are or once were,
they decide which memories they want to take with them into eternity, and forget what is too painful to remember.
As in every social network, the
viewer isn't a mere voyeuristic bystander, but gradually becomes part of the story.

Our process

Early Sunday morning - the team in a brainstorming session
Deadbook was designed and built by six classmates and I
in our second Semester in the Masters of Digital media program.
The class was called Visual Story,
taught by the wonderful George Johnson, and the objective
was to create an interesting interactive story with at least three characters, based on the Greek mythology of Charon, the ferryman of Hades who carried souls of the
recently deceased across the rivers Styx and Acheron.
The site is built with Ruby on Rails and can be
experienced by signing on as a recently departed soul. Click here.
The team consisted of Mark Freeman,
Ken Pratt, Matt Schroeter, Bryant Jones,
SuYon Sohn, Dhruv Adhia, and myself.

My Role

I wrote, directed, filmed and acted in one of the three main stories of this interactive project. The writer Kay Montague, the main character of
my story had recently died of a broken heart, while she was in the process of writing a film script titled Palpitations,
there were a few things she left undone and unsaid before she died, and she was glad to get another chance to tie up some loose ends in
that liminal place between life and death. Or so the story goes...
